What size sump pump do I need for my home?
The right size depends on several factors, such as the size of your basement, how much water your area typically sees, and how deep your sump pit is. Most residential homes do well with a pump in the 1/3 to 1/2 horsepower range, but homes in areas with heavy water infiltration may need more capacity.

How long do sump pumps typically last?
Most sump pumps last between 7 and 10 years with regular maintenance, though this varies depending on how hard the pump works and whether it's been properly serviced. Pumps in areas with frequent water infiltration tend to work harder and may need replacing sooner. If your pump is approaching that range, it's worth having it inspected before it fails when you need it most.
Do you recommend a battery backup?
Yes. Power outages and heavy storms tend to arrive together, which is exactly when your sump pump needs to be running. A battery backup system keeps the pump operating even when the power goes out. RSR can install battery backup systems alongside your primary pump or as an addition to an existing setup.
How often should a sump pump be serviced?
Once a year is the general recommendation — ideally before spring, when snowmelt and rain put the most demand on the system. A basic inspection includes checking that the float switch is moving freely, confirming the pump activates at the right water level, and making sure the discharge line is clear. If you're not sure when your pump was last serviced, that's usually a good reason to have it checked.
What's the difference between a submersible and a pedestal sump pump?
A submersible pump sits inside the sump pit, fully submerged in water. It tends to be quieter, more powerful, and better suited to pits that collect a significant amount of water. A pedestal pump has the motor mounted above the pit on a stand, keeping it out of the water entirely.
Pedestal pumps are generally less expensive and easier to service, but louder and less powerful than submersibles. For most residential applications, a submersible pump is the more practical choice, but the right answer depends on your specific setup.
